Bronx Public Forum on taxpayer service needs

March 21, 2016

National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson and Rep. Jose E. Serrano, ranking member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, convened a public forum at Hostos Community College in the Bronx. About 30 members of the public representing practitioners groups, low income taxpayer clinics, community organizations, members of the military, and local press came together to hear presentations and discuss what taxpayers need and want from the IRS in the future.

Panelists discussed a wide variety of issues, including the continued need for in-person service, unscrupulous tax return preparers, and how crucial tax credits like the EITC are to low-income taxpayers.

Several of the panelists submitted written statements outlining their perspective on the issues.

  • Erik Schryver, Esq. (Bronx Low Income Taxpayer Clinic | Legal Services NYC)
  • German Tejeda (Senior Director, Income Policy | Food Bank for New York City)
  • James Hurst (Legal Ombudsman | New York City Department of Consumer Affairs)

Elliot Quinones (Tax Accountant | Elliot Quinones & Associates) also joined the panel.

The next Forum will take place in Hendersonville, NC on April 4, 2016.
