First Community Public Forum on taxpayer service needs held in Chicago

Earlier this week, National Taxpayer Advocate Nina E. Olson held a Public Forum at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center near Chicago, Illinois, seeking comments on what taxpayers want and need from the IRS to comply with their tax obligations. The forum was held in the congressional district of Rep. Peter Roskam, who co-hosted the event. More than 50 people attended, including tax practitioners, representatives from Low Income Taxpayer Clinics, students, community-based organizations, and other taxpayers.

This was the second in a series of public forums, and the first in a local community, that stem from the National Taxpayer Advocate’s 2015 Annual Report to Congress. In the report, the Advocate expressed concern about whether the IRS’s “Future State” plan adequately addresses taxpayer needs.

To further public awareness and dialogue, Ms. Olson announced plans to hold public forums around the country to hear from taxpayers and tax professionals regarding the “Future State” plan, including their thoughts on the extent to which taxpayers will continue to need telephone and in-person assistance. The public forums seek to ensure the “Future State” plan will better reflect the needs and preferences of U.S. taxpayers as they seek to comply with the tax code.
