The federal income tax return filing due date for most individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically postponed from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. Individual taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed.
This postponement applies to individual taxpayers, including individuals who pay self-employment tax. However, this relief does not apply to estimated tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021. Those payments are still due on April 15. See below, however, for an exception for taxpayers in certain disaster areas.
Individual taxpayers do not need to file any forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax return filing and payment relief.

For taxpayers located in the designated Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana federal disaster areas, you have until June 15, 2021, to file individual tax returns and make tax payments, including estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021. The postponement mentioned above to May 17, does not affect this June deadline.
